It is with deep sadness that the Honors College shares the news of the passing of Ellen Melamed, Director of the Medical Humanities Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.  For several years Ellen taught the Narrative Medicine elective course for the Honors College's Health and Human Values minor.  This was one of the signature electives of the program.  Ellen was a masterful teacher who had a deep and transformative impact on our students.

The child of holocaust survivors, Ellen drew on her family’s history of trauma and illness, as well as her own experiences in the arts, to inform her teaching. A cancer survivor herself, Ellen had a true passion for shining a spotlight on the importance of honoring the patient experience when working with medical and pre-medical students.

Our hearts go out to those of you who knew Ellen and were touched by her soulful teaching.

She will be dearly missed.
