Karna Walter

Assistant Dean for Student Engagement

Dr. Walter leads both the Student Engagement Team in their efforts to welcome Honors students into the Honors community, provide meaningful engagement experiences that help students extend their learning beyond the classroom through internships, research, study abroad, and civic engagement. She directs Honors Orientation and also oversees the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships, which supports students who are well-suited to apply for awards like the Fulbright, Goldwater, Churchill, Truman, Rhodes, and the like. She also oversees the Student Success Team, which is charged with offering developmental advising to our Honors students, pointing them toward appropriate opportunities and guiding them through reflection about how their academic and noncurricular experiences fit together.

After earning a B.A. in English from Calvin College, Dr. Walter came to the University of Arizona to pursue a Ph.D. in Higher Education, graduating in 2000.

Dr. Walter worked in Admissions at Calvin College before taking on several different roles at the University of Arizona, beginning as a Hall Director in the residence halls. She has held different roles in Honors that eventually led to her work as Assistant Dean for Student Engagement. She is enthusiastic about serving Honors students and offering them the most robust opportunities possible for their undergraduate experiences. She regularly teaches one-credit seminars on the topic of Human Trafficking, giving her the chance to engage with Honors students in the classroom as well as out of it.

If you spend any time with Dr. Walter, you will likely learn a few key things: she is a proud Iowa native, and she is a diehard sports enthusiast with a special love for the Arizona Wildcats. She is also an avid reader and supporter of her daughters’ activities, ranging from choir and piano to softball and flag football.
