DISCUSSION THREE - ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

6:00pm - 7:30pm (Arizona Time)

Discussion will be 6:00 - 7:00pm, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A

Topics to be discussed may include:

  • How has Covid-19 changed the way we work, especially in terms of technology?  
  • How might a move toward increased use of AI affect our behavior and interactions in the workplace and beyond, both in the United States and across borders?  
  • How do we avoid AI contributing to misinformation and deal with it when it does? 
  • How does bias affect the development and use of AI?  
  • Are the predicted dangers of AI overblown and really the product of science fiction? 
  • Does automation decrease jobs? Is AI about human empowerment or human displacement?

Space is limited.

Panelist Michael Liou

Michael Liou

Michael Liou leads Strategy & Growth at Chooch AI, an end-to-end visual artificial intelligence platform. Chooch AI provides fast and accurate computer vision training, image, object and process recognition for retail, media, advertising, healthcare, aviation and security industries. Prior to joining Chooch AI, Michael has been an active early stage investor in NY, LA, and the Bay Area focused on FinTech, consumer, SaaS, and healthcare. Michael is a highly accomplished multi-disciplined investment professional, private investor, entrepreneur, advisor, and former board member in the Bay Area. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated the ability to drive innovation and growth, served as a trusted advisor to large institutions, managed risk and financial assets, mentored others and developed strong teams and businesses.

Panelist Melanie Mitchell

Melanie Mitchell, PhD

Dr. Melanie Mitchell is the Davis Professor of Complexity at the Santa Fe Institute, and Professor of Computer Science (currently on leave) at Portland State University. Her current research focuses on conceptual abstraction, analogy-making, and visual recognition in artificial intelligence systems.  Melanie is the author or editor of six books and numerous scholarly papers in the fields of artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and complex systems. Her book Complexity: A Guided Tour (Oxford University Press) won the 2010 Phi Beta Kappa Science Book Award and was named by Amazon.com as one of the ten best science books of 2009. Her latest book is Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux). Dr. Mitchell earned her PhD in computer science from the University of Michigan.

Panelist Sudha Ram

Sudha Ram, PhD

Dr. Sudha Ram joined the Eller College of Management in 1985 after earning her PhD in Management Information Systems from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She directs the INSITE Center for Business Intelligence and Analytics and has received more than $60 million in research funding. Her areas of expertise include big data analytics, machine learning, network science and business intelligence. She was a speaker for a TEDx talk in December 2013 on “Creating a Smarter World with Big Data”. She received a fellow of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) award in 2018. She is an editor for the Journal of Business Analytics and a senior editor for Journal of AIS. Dr. Ram serves as the Anheuser-Busch Chair in MIS, Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
