Fall 2024

In this course, students will learn the basic craft of story construction both in prose and screenwritten form. Students will construct a story of their ownbased on the tenants they learn in class, then go to work adapting that short fiction piece into a short film script. Students will learn what makes forproper adaptation from page to screen—what to leave in, what to cut, what needs to be expressed more visually and how to do that. Through a series of craft readings on the subject (from Robert McKee, Janet Burroway, David Mamet, among others) and the reading/viewing of various films (from Oscar winning foreign short films to recent classics like Get Out), students will gain clear, concrete ideas about film, literature, and their own creative processes.
